Godfather Of Gunge Dave Benson Phillips is now a YouTuber and wrestler – 22yrs after kids TV show Get Your Own Back

CHILDREN's BBC star Dave Benson Phillips was known as the 'godfather of gunge' throughout the 90s.

But these days his life is no less weird, having been the victim of a bizarre death hoax and taken up pro wrestling.

Dave, now 56, hosted iconic kids shows including chaotic gameshow Get Your Own Back, which saw adults thrown into a vat of gunge.

It ran for an astonishing 190 episodes from 1991 to 2003 before he went on to a string of new projects.

Among them was a totally unexpected foray into the world of wrestling, linking up with independent grappling outfit Riptide.

Dave was seen battering an opponent with a string of killer moves in a match described as "ruining the childhoods of his opponents".

Fans couldn't believe what they were seeing, marvelling at his "odd career path" while joking that he didn't have any gunge-based moves.

Outside the ring he took Get Your Own Back on the road with a live show and threw himself into social media with spoof reality show Getting Back.

But the internet hasn't always been a source of fun for Dave, who was involved in some truly weird moments.

In 2019, he sparked uproar after trying to offer some advice to fans about readjusting their clocks.

He later offered his "sincerest apologies to those who were shocked or offended".

The star was also devastated when a hoax swept the internet claiming he had died in a car accident.

The sick scam was taken so seriously by some that flowers offering condolences were sent to his wife.

He later told his local paper: "The distress it caused was unparalleled. I remember my sisters calling up and they didn’t get off the phone until they could hear my voice."
