Moment Australian Airforce jet is seen weaving between skyscrapers as Twitter uses slam stunt reminiscent of 9/11

 THIS is the heart-stopping moment a whopping cargo jet weaves between skyscrapers during a "risky" stunt some say is unnervingly reminiscent of 9/11.

The astonishing flight through Brisbane left locals stunned - while footage has quickly gone viral online.

And opinions are split over the low-altitude caper on Thursday, with some saying it made them think of the deadliest terror attack on US soil.

The Royal Australian Air Force C-17 cargo jet was spotted on a practice run ahead of the annual Sunsuper Riverfire event, which took place on Saturday night.

Residents were warned of the rehearsal in advance.

However, many were still startled by the sight of the Boeing C-17A Globemaster III strategic airlift aircraft swooping close to buildings.

NBC senior executive Mike Sington saw the footage on Twitter.

Posting a video, he said: "No, no, no, just no."A Royal Australian Air Force jet weaves through the skyscrapers of downtown Brisbane, on purpose.

"It was a rehearsal for an air show, causing immediate flashbacks to 9/11."

Others pointed out the flight was nearly as dangerous as it appeared.

They say the plane was actually flying above a river through the city - and not directly through built-up areas, as the video appears to show.

Australian reported Chad Ryan said: "It's not immediately discernible in the angle in this video, but that plane is flying above a river that runs through the city.

'VERY RISKY'

"Not weaving in between buildings.

"Also it was widely publicised before it occurred so people weren't caught off guard."

However, many online called the flight "terrifying".

A pilot of a C-17 jet in the US Air Force who wished to remain anonymous told Task & Purpose the stunt would never be allowed to be performed in the States.

And he branded the move "insane".

"If the crew's timing is off or if they are slow to react, the jet would collide with a building. Very risky," he said.

The air force told locals of the flight in advance.

In a statement, officials said: "Safety, noise management and the environment are vital considerations in the planning and conduct of Defence flying activities.

"Participating squadrons will operate with a view to minimising the impact on local communities.

"The health and safety of all personnel participating in this event is paramount."
