CHINA has been preparing for a high-tech war with the United States with stealth bombers, hypersonic missiles and even terminator troops.
While America has been bogged down fighting in the Middle East, the Chinese have been pouring billions into trying to steal a march on them in order to win a ‘total war’ over Taiwan.
Recent days have seen mounting tensions over Taiwan and China has promised it will "fight to the death" against the island's allies after warning global war could be triggered "at any time".
But top-brass fear America has been left behind in the arms race with China, whose President Xi Jinping aims for a military to overtake the US by 2050.
Over the past 20 years, the US military has been fighting low-tech wars against insurgents using equipment designed for use in the Cold War.
Gen. Mark Kelly, commander of the Air Force’s Air Combat Command, said many of its high-tech weapons have been aging.
“During that same 20 years, China organized, trained, and equipped its military singularly focused and singularly invested across every domain in a high-end fight,” he said.
“Singularly focused and singularly invested on fighting us.” China is hoping to use the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean to defeat America by investing in terrifying hypersonic missiles designed to take on the US Navy’s biggest ships.
The ‘Carrier Killer’ missile comprises of a rocket that flies to around 25 miles above the earth and then launches a Hypersonic Glide Vehicle (HGV).
Armed it warhead, it then travels at 10 times the speed of sound and can be steered onto a target with such accuracy analysts believe only artificial intelligence and computer systems can stop them.
China is also developing a new advanced stealth bomber capable of hitting major US bases in the Pacific with nuclear weapons.
The 5000-mile range of the Xian H-20 means it is able to strike Guam and other key facilities, making it a “game changer” in the words of one expert.
Images revealed in a magazine run by state-owned defence corporation China North Industries Group describes the aircraft a “the god of war in the sky”.
'HIGH END FIGHT'
Drones also play a key role in China’s high-tech strategy to take on America, include ones that can fly at hypersonic speeds and use artificial intelligence.
The WZ-8 drone is able to fly at up to five times the speed of sound and is able to spy on US forces at large distances, while the CH-6 is designed to sink American ships.
A terrifying new war machine that can unleash swarms of “suicide” drones at troops and tanks was unveiled last year.
Chinese strategists also believe that ever-more-advanced autonomous systems will gradually replace human frontline combatants, reports Defense One.
There have also been reports that Beijing is developing a top secret underwater drone designed to track and destroy enemy submarines with no human input.
The unmanned attack robot was first test fired in the Taiwan Strait a decade ago but its existence was not made public until now.
As well as conventional weapons, China has also been upgrading its nukes including a new generation of submarines capable of wiping out several US cities.
DEADLY MISSILES
They include the Type 094A, also known as the Jin-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine which is capable of firing the JL-3 'Big Wave' missile with a range of over 6000 miles.
Beijing may even be planning to genetically-modify its soldiers for an army of Terminator-style super troops, a defence think tank has warned.
Experts at Rusi say GM soldiers could be faster, stronger and cleverer than their battlefield opponents and even feel no pain.
Their DNA could also be adapted to help them recover more quickly from injuries or give them superior hearing and night vision.
Rusi’s Professor John Louth said: “The threat is obvious and real. Chinese money could be stealing a march on western armed forces and that is deeply concerning.”
